Alaska has a well-established legal cannabis market, with recreational use legalized in 2014 and medical use allowed since 1998. High taxes have fueled a strong illicit market and strained legal operators. While lawmakers have proposed tax reforms, no major changes have passed. Alaska allows on-site consumption lounges and has been easing marketing rules, but the industry still faces challenges from high taxation, market oversaturation and unregulated competition.
