U.S. regulated cannabis markets by state

As of mid-2025, 42 states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical cannabis, while 24 of those states have also approved recreational or adult-use cannabis. Because every state with a recreational cannabis market also maintains a medical program, a total of 24 states and the District of Columbia currently regulate both medical and recreational cannabis markets in parallel. While counted here, some medical markets severely limit access to full-potency cannabis.
